The best day trips from Phoenix.

Ghost towns and lakes under an hour away, red rock and mountain towns at two, and the Grand Canyon for the ambitious - grouped by how long you are willing to drive.

Updated October 2026 · 4 min read

One of the best things about a base in Phoenix is how much is within a day's reach. Within an hour you can be in the Superstition Mountains or on a lake in a desert canyon. Within two, you can be among Sedona's red rocks, in a mining town on a mountainside or in the pines. And with an early start, the Grand Canyon is a day trip too.

We have grouped these by drive time from central Phoenix, so you can match the trip to the day you have.

01 · Day trips

Under an hour

Superstition Mountains and Lost Dutchman State Park

Apache JunctionAbout 45 min

The jagged Superstition Mountains rise sharply from the east edge of the Valley, the setting of the legend of the Lost Dutchman's gold mine. The state park at their base has trails for every level, from flat nature walks to the steep Siphon Draw, and spectacular light at sunset.

Goldfield Ghost Town

Apache JunctionAbout 45 min

A rebuilt 1890s mining town with a narrow-gauge railroad, mine tour, gunfight shows and a saloon. It is next door to Lost Dutchman, so the two make an easy morning with children.

Tortilla Flat and Canyon Lake

State Route 88, east of Apache JunctionAbout 1 hour

The road winds through the Superstitions to Canyon Lake, a reservoir set in a red-walled canyon with boat tours, and on to Tortilla Flat, a tiny old stagecoach stop with a saloon walled in dollar bills and prickly pear ice cream.

Local tip: Beyond Tortilla Flat the road turns to dirt and has had long closures. Treat Tortilla Flat as the turnaround unless ADOT reports the full route open.

Cave Creek and Carefree

North of ScottsdaleAbout 45 min

Cave Creek is an Old West town of saloons, steakhouses and live country music; neighboring Carefree is quieter, with a desert garden and a giant sundial. A relaxed afternoon and dinner with real desert all around.

02 · Day trips

One to two hours

Boyce Thompson Arboretum

SuperiorAbout 1 hour

Arizona's oldest and largest botanical garden, set beneath the dramatic cliffs of Picketpost Mountain. Trails loop past desert plants from around the world, a creek and a small lake. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.

Wickenburg

Northwest of PhoenixAbout 1 hour

A small Western town known for its dude ranches and the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, with a walkable historic downtown. Good for a slow day with a cowboy flavor.

Arcosanti

Off Interstate 17, Cordes LakesAbout 1.25 hours

Architect Paolo Soleri's experimental desert town, a striking concrete settlement built on the edge of a canyon, where the famous Soleri bells are made. Guided tours run most days, and it is an easy stop on the way to Sedona.

Montezuma Castle National Monument

Camp VerdeAbout 1.5 hours

A five-story cliff dwelling built by the Sinagua people more than 800 years ago, set in a limestone cliff above Beaver Creek. A short paved loop leads to the viewpoint. It is right off Interstate 17, so it fits neatly into a Sedona day.

Payson and Tonto Natural Bridge

Below the Mogollon RimAbout 1.5 hours

Climb from saguaros into pine forest on the way to Payson. Nearby, Tonto Natural Bridge State Park protects what is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world, with trails down into the creek below it.

Prescott

Central highlandsAbout 1.75 hours

Arizona's old territorial capital: Courthouse Plaza, Whiskey Row, antique shops and cool pine air. Add Watson Lake and the boulders of the Granite Dells for a short walk.

Tucson

Southern ArizonaAbout 1.75 hours

Saguaro National Park, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Mission San Xavier del Bac fill a day easily, and Tucson's Sonoran-style food is reason enough to stay for dinner.

Sedona

Verde ValleyAbout 2 hours

The classic. Red rock buttes, scenic drives, short and long hikes, galleries and sunset from Airport Mesa. See our full Sedona day trip guide.

Jerome and the Verde Valley

Cottonwood and JeromeAbout 2 hours

A hillside mining town turned artists' colony, and below it the tasting rooms of Arizona's wine country. See our Verde Valley wine guide.

03 · Day trips

The long days

Flagstaff

Northern ArizonaAbout 2.25 hours

Cool mountain air, a historic Route 66 downtown, Lowell Observatory and the San Francisco Peaks. In summer it is the quickest escape from the heat; in winter, there is skiing at Arizona Snowbowl.

Tombstone

Southeast ArizonaAbout 3 hours

The O.K. Corral, Boot Hill and the boardwalks of Allen Street. A long day out and back; combine it with Bisbee if you can stay a night.

The Grand Canyon from the South Rim, with the Colorado River far below

The Grand Canyon South Rim

Northern ArizonaAbout 3.5 to 4 hours

The longest day trip on the list and the most rewarding. Leave Phoenix by 7am, stop in Sedona or Williams on the way, spend the afternoon walking the rim and be home late in the evening. Read our Grand Canyon day trip guide before you go.

How to plan a day trip

  • Start early. Leaving Phoenix by 7 or 8am beats the traffic on Interstate 17 and gets you to the scenery while the light is soft.
  • Go with the season. Head north to Sedona, Prescott and Flagstaff in summer, and stay in the desert - the Superstitions, Tucson, the arboretum - in winter.
  • Watch the Sunday traffic. Interstate 17 back into Phoenix on a Sunday afternoon can add an hour. Leave earlier or later than everyone else.
  • Carry water. Even on short walks, and even in winter. Desert air is drier than it feels.

Getting there

Day trips, chauffeured.

A day trip with a chauffeur is booked by the hour: one vehicle and one driver from hotel pickup to drop-off, with as many stops as you like. Everyone gets to look out of the window, and nobody has to drive home after a long day.
